Learn from others

The Portuguese General Directorate for Intervention on Addictive Behaviours and Dependencies (SICAD) developed a drug prevention tool for young people experiencing confinement. “I face COVID-19 with Others - Don’t be the virus” is a story that can be played by the family, in school or used as a tool used by therapists.

“Me and the Others” is a universal prevention programme aimed at young people and implemented since 2007 in Portuguese schools. It is based on the exploration of interactive narratives in which players assume the role of the main character while managing day to day situations for a group of 9 friends aged between 13 and 19 years old. The narratives address themes of adolescence – sexuality, eating disorders, physical exercise and health, bullying, crossing them with addictive behaviours.

SICAD has recently created a new story, called “I face COVID-19 with Others”, aiming at experiencing the confinement due to the COVID-19 pandemic, crossing it with the risks associated with addictive behaviours. While interacting with the 9 friends, the player will be able to access information, available resources and tips for better responding to the feelings created by the confinement. It is a story, no right and wrong answers, created to trigger reflexions and conversations that help to better deal with feelings that we all share in this period.

The story is available only in Portuguese at SICAD website for all those interested and can be used as a family game, as a topic for a class debate or even as psychological support tool to be provided by experts.
